The Healing Power of “Singing Bowls”

The Healing Power of “Singing Bowls”

Sound Healing with Crystal BowlsImagine for a moment you’re just getting settled into your seat at the symphony. The musicians are warming up, adjusting their instruments. So many sounds, pitches, reverberations, each instrument being tuned to a very specific frequency in preparation for the melodious event ahead. Now, imagine you are one of the instruments. You are part of the sound symphony about to take place.

That’s what it felt like on my visit with gifted sound healing therapist, Daniel Bastacky, and it was nothing short of a full sensory experience.

Sound healing is the therapeutic application of frequencies used to bring the body and mind back into a state of healthy balance. A powerful healing modality since ancient times, it affects each organ, bone and tissue, down to the individual cells of our bodies.

Every part of your body carries a specific frequency- from tooth to toe. Disharmony can creep in with everything from mild stress to full-blown trauma. Energy can become blocked and stagnant, and much like an instrument needing to be tuned, your body is no different. With an incredibly tense back and neck from working on the computer far more than I’d like, I’d been in need of a tune-up for a while.

I first heard about sound therapy years ago in Dr. Mitchell Gaynor’s book, The Healing Power of Sound. Dr. Gaynor, MD is a board certified medical oncologist, internist and hematologistwho uses integrative medical treatments, or mind-body treatments, to complement Western medicine. His practice is Gaynor Integrative Oncology. At the time I read the book I was in my 20’s with no real complaints, just an interest in lots of different healing methods.

15 years later, I was ready to see what this treatment could do for my overly tense traps: neck shoulder and upper back muscles. It was time to see firsthand if sound healing really could re-harmonize these cells, release the unwanted blocks, cleanse, balance and nurture my cells back into a gentle re-alignment.

“Daniel even had a ocean wave sound machine playing for our session.”

My session began face down on the massage table as my new friend, Daniel, applied weighted tuning forks along my spine. It was a wonderful sensation unlike anything I’ve felt before. As I began to relax, he moved on to placing crystal bowls on my upper and lower back before treating my lower legs and feet. While playing the bowls, he joined his voice with that of the reverberating quartz crystal. It produced the most wonderful sound sensation, like participating in a Gregorian chant.

Next he asked me to turn face up as he placed the singing bowls along my stomach, chest and head correlating to the chakra points. He told me each bowl has a note associated with a particular chakra. His wife gave him his first bowl and a friend, he made while attending a training at The Chopra Center, showed him how to really harness the power of sound.

That friend, Andrew Clark, introduced him to his “alchemy bowls”. With gemstones mixed into the quartz, the sound they produce carries the quality of that stone making them a powerful vibratory experience. In our session Daniel continued playing each quartz bowl, finishing it off with a rainbow of sound in the form of energy chimes. I felt centered, present and clear.

Next he placed Tibetan singing bowls on and around me. As he played, his vocal toning joined the bowls and the experience was serene and meditative. I’m fairly certain I could have laid there for days if he would have let me.

During treatment Daniel also used a Cymatherapy machine. It’s an electronic sound therapy tool that helps restore the body by pulsating corrective frequencies associated with healthy tissues and organ systems. The sound waves promote the synching of the cells back into their optimal state of vibrational resonance.

His particular model had close to 500 different frequency settings. I found it fascinating that the machine would be pulsating in one area and I’d feel it somewhere entirely different. Daniel explained, “The energy of the sound moves where it’s needed. You may not know you have a problem there but the energy will try to move to fill up the voids.”

Interview on various ways to experience sound healing

I left the session feeling calm, centered and peaceful. Physically, I noticed an immediate difference – I was looser than I had been in a long time. My partner and cohort in all things MDQ noticed a difference too. Saying he hadn’t seen me look that relaxed in months, he’s already put in for me to schedule another session.

It was a truly unique experience. Daniel’s intuition into the areas needing attention and his gift of layering sounds takes you into a deep meditative and healing state. His vocal harmonics, joined with the bowls, washed over me to create an experience like no other. Afterward I asked him about the use of his voice and the rippling effect it created. He smiled and said, “It’s like riding a wave with my voice.”

It was a perfect analogy and it got me thinking about how sound travels in waveform through bodies of water. Sound travels much further in water than air. Considering that our bodies are 70-80% water, it makes a lot of sense that sound waves can quite literally penetrate at a cellular level, and I can now vouch for this first hand.

Sound Therapy — My Bio

Sound Therapy

My Bio
In My Own Words

Daniel+cymaI was inspired to get a set of bowls and start working with them after I went to Spa Moksha in Birmingham, Alabama in 2001 for Ayurvedic treatments. The treatments included sound healing massage. The massage therapist played the bowls as part of the massage sessions.

The bowls sound was amazing, my body took in the sound in an amazing way. It made me aware of what was happening not just with my body, but with my energy field as well. The sessions I had were magical and transformative. As the bowls were played in the small massage room, the pure sound moved all over the place, around me, above me and through me; it was truly amazing.

A few years later, I met Pat who runs Harmony Learning Center and she asked if I was interested in working with the bowls at her center on an ongoing basis. I gladly accepted her offer and began monthly sessions. After months of sessions I developed my own style from working with the bowls and my voice.

I did research about others who work with the bowls from a book called “The Healing Tones of the Crystal Bowls” by Renee Brodie that had stories of how other sound healers have worked with them. I incorporated a technique from the book that included not just sounding the bowls from base chakra to crown chakra but also going down from crown chakra to base chakra so the receiver would be back in their bodies and grounded. I also figured out an arrangement of the bowls that work well. I set the bowls up in a V pattern with the crown bowl above the head on the floor and the base bowl below the feet. This arrangement encourages the flow of energy to move around the triangle.CB+C Chest

In 2006 I attended a Chopra Center Meditation retreat at a Lake Lanier Resort that included a bowl Master named Andrew Clark. I had the amazing opportunity to exchange sound treatments with him. He put my largest bowl on my shins and played it while his partner played a second bowl on the floor above my head.

Another magical moment for me as my bones resonated with this incredible sound and harmonics were created by the sound of the second bowl mixing with sound with the one on my legs. He also put a bowl on my lower back and played it while a second bowl played on the floor above my head. Andrew showed me new ways of working with the bowls on the body and how to combine 2 and 3 bowls to create amazing harmonics using Pythagorean Musical Correspondences.

The work that I do now incorporates what I have learned from Andrew and my own research and experience. Now I refine what I do with my bowls and my voice. I try new ways of working with the bowls establishing my own style and method in a unique and healing way.

The Profound Affect Of Sound Therapy, Crystal Singing Bowls, and Vibrational Medicine

Tuning Forks

More About Crystal Bowls…Resonance and Vibrational Medicine…
And How Sound Therapy Has Such A Profound Affect

Many cultures recognize the importance of music and sound as healing power. In ancient civilizations of India, the Orient, Africa, Europe and among the Aboriginals of Australia the practice of using sound to heal and achieve balance from within has existed for many years.

The Tibetans still use bells, chimes, bowls and chanting as the foundation of their spiritualpractice. In Bali, the Gong and drum are used in ceremonies to uplift and send messages. The Aboriginals and Native American shamans use vocal toning and drumming in sacred ceremony to adjust any imbalance of spirit.

The priests of ancient Egypt knew how to use vowel sounds to resonate their energy centers or chakras. There is a direct link between different parts of the body and specific sounds. Such a technique appears extremely old, yet healing through sound goes back even further at least as far back as Atlantis where the power of sound was combined with the power of quartz crystal.

Crystal bowl sound is a form of vibration medicine which validates that everything in the universe is in a state of vibration and the frequency at which an object or person naturally vibrates is called resonance. The Chakras, bones, and organs of the body all possess a different resonant frequency.

When a part of the body is vibrating out of tune it is called disease. A body in a healthy state of being when each cell and organ creates a resonance, that is harmony with the whole being.

T ChimesVibrational medicine is based on the idea that all illness is characterized by a blockage in the channels on some level, either in the energetic channels or arteries, veins or nerves. When there is a blockage, the organ in question stops vibrating at a healthy frequency and thus it results in some kind of illness. Through sound and vibration one can break up, dissolve and release these blockages that occur in our etheric body.

The crystal bowl sound emits a pure holographic template of radiant light that corresponds to the octave of sound within our etheric body. Since sound can be translated into color, the body may be seen as visible frequency that produces an auric color field which reflects emotional states of consciousness.

The tone of the crystal bowls produces a vibrational sound field which resonates the light body, chakra and corresponding physical area. A series of crystal sound therapies facilitates the rebalancing of each receiver back into an elevated level of radiance. Pure quartz contains the full spectrum of light that is related to the seven Chakras and thus heals the listener by bringing pure light through sound as specific color back into human aura. The effect is multiplied as the crystal bowls are played. Crystal acts as an oscillator, magnifying and transmitting pure tone. Like a radio transmitter, the crystal bowls transmit energy into the atmosphere, filling a person’s aura with vibrational radiance.

The crystal bowls are made of 99.8% pure silicon quartz. One reason why the pure tones vibrate our body is that it has a natural affinity to quartz. The human body is composed of many crystallite substances, the bones, blood and DNA are crystalline in structure as well as the liquid crystal structure of the brain. Even on a molecular level, our cells contain silica, which balances our electro-magnetic energies, and this is the same formula as natural quartz crystal.

The quartz crystal tones hold the vibration of white light. It has the power to bring about a positive shift in our consciousness and as our awareness expands, we grow close to our original selves and start to reflect the highest radiance in our physical form.
